Mansel Phillips, (Head of IT at Carmarthenshire County Council) shows Tonia a couple of his cawl spoons and critiques the spoons that Tonia made.
Cawl, the national stew of wales was traditionally eaten with wooden spoons in some areas of wales. The spoons that Mansel shows in this video were made by his wife’s uncle who died about 15 years ago. His hobby was making spoons. I made my first spoon, a love spoon about 10 years ago. A couple of years ago I took Welsh Classes, and this caused me to think about ‘Welsh identity’ and became curious about the more domestic, everyday version of the handmade spoon, like the ones I saw in an antique market in Llandeilo. I then started experimenting with carving spoons.
Apologies for the camera shake, it was sat on the table, clearly not a winning strategy. This was a test of the new JVC Everio GZ-HD300. The cropping to exclude Mansel’s head was deliberate, I wanted to film Mansel’s hands in automatic mode because I was interested in concentrating on the handling of the spoons.

Leonid Nikolaev, a member of Solidarity, Russia’s leading opposition group, staked out a street corner until he saw a VIP car pull up. Pulling a blue bucket over his head, he ran up to the car and over its roof. What would be seen in many countries as a funny stunt was seen as a daring provocation in Russia, and video of the event spread virally over the internet. The car’s owner, reportedly a member of the FSB, Russia’s secret police, was not amused.
